Methacton students from Worcester, Skyview, Arcola and the High School competed at the Special Olympic Games hosted by Spring-Ford Area School District on Thursday, May 8th. The event welcomed eight different districts, and each student participated in three different events: the softball throw, standing long jump and 50 meter race.

It was a sun-filled and hot day that kicked off with an opening ceremony, where Methacton was the first district to be welcomed. Each district followed with their respective mascots and chosen songs.

Methacton High School brought 12 athletes, each with a student buddy. After each event, the athlete and their buddy went to the ribbons table to grab their ribbon for their earned place. For each event, Spring-Ford also had a big group of their students as helpers to score and guide the athletes through what they needed to do.

Students at Methacton can help support events like these by joining the Unified Sports Club and the Best Buddies Club.

Special Olympics Pennsylvania states that their mission is “to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community…”
